We took down our former Fiber business website to reduce costs. I will be working on this page as a replacement, soon. You can find our own fiber under THISpage. Please call regarding our fiber arts supplies, tools, kits and classes. The wording from our previous page appears below, and will be set up properly soon.
Fleeces, Roving and Yarns...Fleeces: 2018 Shearing will be mid March, and we will have about 30 fleeces this year!
Please NOTE: The Herdwick fleece is a RUG WOOL, or good for OUTER WEAR. It is not recommended for wear next to the skin, as it will be scritchy. If you want the Herdwick colors, but want something softer, we may occasionally have a fleece that does not express the Herdwick traits as strongly, and will be softer. Please call to discuss availability and possible color.
US Herdwick Cross Fleeces - well skirted, unique color variations from black/brown to silver grey - some mixed color fleeces available. These fleeces are specially selected for showing the most Herdwick type traits of the dual ("quad") coat. See below for availability.
Additionally we have fleeces which display non-Herdwick type fiber. These lean toward suffolk and polypay style fleeces, but the animals they are from are 62.5% Herdwick from our own Flock. These fleeces are available in a nearly pure black, from "Alysia", and a milk chocolate grey, from "Helvellyn".
Hogget (first shearing) - $22.00/lb 2nd Shear on - $18.00/lb Non Herdy type - $15.00/lb Dark or Marbled color greys mixed
Shipping costs are additional. We will calculate your total cost and contact you before shipping.
NOTE: Availability, color and pricing are subject to change without notice.
Roving:
We currently have about 10lbs of beautiful soft white, with Herdwick type texture, pin-draft roving. It is perfect for locker-hooking rugs, handspinning and felting. $6.00/oz
Yarn:
We have several lines of our Herdwick cross 3 ply yarn, ideal for rug hooking/punch needle, knitting, crocheting and weaving.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PURE HERDWICK FLEECES!
Herdwick Wool is a unique "quad-coat", and contains wool, hair, kemp and a unique fiber called heterotypic fiber. This fiber changes its insulative properties according to the weather/season.
Because of these various fibers, Herdwick wool, in the UK, is primarily used for carpet/rugs, or outerwear - renowned for it's "Herdwick Tweed" jackets. It is not a fiber you would appreciate on the skin. However....
Because of these unique fibers, the wool is exceptionally warm, and weather resistant, allowing these sheep to survive at 3,000 feet altitude. Shepherds in England claim that after a rain, the Herdwick sheep are the first to dry.
Additionally, the hair and kemp make the wool very strong, which lends itself wonderfully for rugs and carpets.
These yarns will work excellently for outerwear, or garments that may be lined with another softer material.

Weaving at The Wren's Nest...NEW LOOMS available, see our New Items! page for info. Price, description and availability is subject to change without notice. AND there is a NEW, SIMPLIFIED method of weaving on the Rectangle Frame Loom. Sign up for one of our workshops, call for more info! Welcome to the wonderful world of continuous strand weaving!! These are the only looms that dress themselves! No warping needed. That's because all warping and weaving is done simultaneously, with a single strand, from a center pull ball of yarn. After laying down the first two warp threads, just weave a loop down from the top of the loom and spread it apart. Each woven loop provides two wefts woven at once (the sides of the loop), PLUS the next warp (the bottom of the loop). As you continue to weave loops and spread them apart, the weaving progresses from the outside corners to the center AND from the top to the bottom of the loom all at the same time. Very different. Amazingly simple to use, and perfect for a beginning weaver while intriguing and challenging for an experienced weaver, as well. This technique, allowing unlimited creativity, also lets you see the entire weaving as it develops. Change colors, structures & fibers at your whim. Plan intricate designs. Unique and delicate yarns can be used in both warp and weft directions, with NO loom waste, thereby they are very economical, and great for your valuable handspun! Two or more pieces can be easily joined together to create blankets, ponchos, ruana, skirts, vests, scarves, rugs and more - limited only by your imagination. Hand-made in the USA, these looms are built of natural gorgeous hardwoods in Maple, Cherry, Red Oak and Black Walnut. We carry all sizes, from the Spriggs Patented, Adjustable 7' Triangle, which gives you 9 looms in one, 5' Square and 7' Rectangle, also providing numerous sized looms in one, to travel sizes and the famous Mini-module Kits. We also carry a variety of patterns for projects made on these looms. Looms can be built to custom sizes, as well. Call for more information. In addition, “The Continuous Strand Weaving Method ” is available here. Please call with any questions! All items can be shipped direct to your door - call for shipping estimate - or picked up at our shop or one of our shows. Please note, woods used are a product of nature and will exhibit certain variations in color or texture not affecting the functionality whatsoever, but certainly adding to the unique beauty of your loom, making it one of a kind.
All looms come with easy to follow, written instructions.
Looms are also available in custom sizes
Long sides of the Triangle looms fit to the matching size (7', travel size or mini-module) of Square or Rectangle looms, for ease in piecing shapes together. (see example in photo for 18" square travel loom below).

How to use our wonderful wooden weaving hooks....These hooks are handcrafted from hardwoods, here in upstate NY. Each tool is unique, one of a kind, and has a smooth large hook opening that accommodates even heavier yarns without pinching like other hooks out there. They are light-weight and comfortable to use. I use the hook to save a lot of time weaving, as they range from about 10" for smaller looms, up to about 24", the longest available.
gain a wider section of pickup per pass with it than using your hands, reduces number of repetitions of pickup to complete weaving each loop.
with fuzzy or sticky yarns like mohair, use the hook to slide across the loom to open the "shed" before bringing your loop down
easily weave twill with no misses, these hooks have a convenient hole on the other end that I tie a long section of yarn onto. That way, I can start at the very bottom, pick up my appropriate threads for the twill pattern all the way up to the top and the trailing yarn in the "eye" of this hook holds the pattern threads. Hook my weft yarn, and slowly pull the tail from the bottom, bringing hook and yarn down all together.
simplify lace - use the hook backwards. pick up your shed from the top down, numbering the threads to my eyes - 1, 2, 4, 1, 2 4, etc, using the eye end of the hook. Then, when the hook is near the top, hook it on the weft yarn to draw it down.
Useful for harness loom weavers, finish weaving the last narrow section of warp where your standard shuttle won't reach.
Actually a couple other uses - they are handy for the weaving itch between your shoulders, and, as a weaving instructor, I use it as a pointer, as well. Listening to classical music, you can join the conductor, too! (Drumming is not recommended.)

Square and Bookmark Multi Looms Square Multi-Loom The Multi has a different look! It's the perfect 4" square loom for all your favorite finer yarns! The instruction book that comes with your loom will illustrate all three of these techniques for you. Shipping is additional, so call ahead. Available in maple, Oak, Mahogany, Ash, Walnut and Cherry. MADE IN USA!

Weaving Tools... Updated 10/11/15 Wooden Hook Tools ~ our own, the longest available! We make the longest and only wooden hook weaving/lace tool out there!
These are a long flat and narrow wooden tool with a hook at one tapered end and a small eye at the other end which is specially formed for weaving lace. I highly recommend this tool for creating a longer swath of "shed" than you can with your hand or locker hook. It prevents pesky spreading in your warp threads as you progress. It is also excellent in separating fuzzier fibers, as well as maintaining structure when weaving twills and other advanced techniques. Also useful to harness loom weavers for filling in the last available warp, where standard shuttles won't fit. Recommended for Travel or larger frame looms, table or floor harness looms. Instructions below:
Short (8" to 12"): $12.00 Long: (13" to 24") $15.00
For wood color comparison - furthest left is cherry, next is maple, 3 middle are oak, next is maple, right is black walnut. Wood availability is subject to change without notice. We attempt to meet customer preference whenever possible, substitutions will be made at our discretion when necessary.
How to use our wonderful wooden weaving hooks....These hooks, pictured below, are handcrafted here in upstate NY of hardwoods. Each tool is unique, one of a kind, and has a smooth large hook opening that accommodates even heavier yarns without pinching like other hooks out there. They are light-weight and comfortable to use. I use the hook to save a lot of time weaving, as they range from about 10" for smaller looms, up to about 22". Pics follow this info.....
gain a wider section of pickup per pass with it than using your hands, which otherwise allows only about 8" of pick up at a time - this needs to be repeated many times all the way to the bottom, once you're near the center. With the hook pictured, I only need to repeat the pick up twice for each loop woven, and the loops pull down in one fell swoop
eliminate the headache of weaving with fuzzy or sticky yarns like mohair, you will see in the video, once you pick up the section of your fuzzy yarn, slide the hook across your warps to the other side and back, then hook your yarn and pull the loop down. Pick up the rest and do the same, anchor your loop and open across. Viola! No more headache!
easily weave twill with no misses, I pick up my pattern with the hook from the bottom up, BUT, since I would easily lose my place by working in sections from the top down, as with plain weave, these hooks have a convenient hole on the other end that I tie a long section of yarn onto. That way, I can start at the very bottom, pick up my appropriate threads for the twill pattern all the way up to the top and the trailing yarn in the "eye" of this hook holds the pattern threads. Hook my "weft" yarn, and slowly pull the tail from the bottom, bringing hook and yarn down all together. (Hint - if using sticky yarn in this use, slide the hook back and forth a few times on the way up to open the shed as you pick up). When finished, use the trailing yarn for fringe if made.
simplify lace - when weaving something such as Huck Lace, I use my hook backwards. I translate the pattern for the lace for 4 shaft loom, and therefore pick up my shed from the top down, numbering the threads to my eyes - 1, 2, 4, 1, 2 4, etc, using the eye end of the hook. Then, when I get to where the hook is near the top, I prepare to hook it on the weft yarn to draw it down. (Again, open the shed with it before bringing down the weft.)
Actually a couple other uses - they are handy for the weaving itch between your shoulders, and, as a weaving instructor, I use it as a pointer, as well. Listening to classical music, you can join the conductor, too!Locker HooksNickel plated, this tool is used for fringe work and removing your finished piece from the loom, as well as joining multiple pieces to working more advanced weaving structures such as leno lace, and embellishments.

Chiaogoo Needle Holder...This is an actual section of Moso bamboo (see Bamboo Facts, below) with a beautiful, laser engraved ChiaoGoo on it. They are approximately 4" in diameter and 6" tall and can easily hold up to 20 pairs of needles. Great in the kitchen or office too! $10.00 each Bamboo Facts
1. Bamboo is a grass! There are more than 1,000 different species of bamboo in the world. More than half of them grow in China.
2. Moso bamboo is the largest and strongest bamboo. It is mostly grown in China (6.7 million acres), but can also be found in Japan (1.2 million acres). ChiaoGoo needles and hooks are made from Chinese Moso bamboo.
3. Bamboo grows very fast! A new bamboo stem grows to a full length of about 75 feet in only a few months and matures to hardness in about 5 years. Believe it or not, in the spring you can actually hear the bamboo growing! It sounds like an army marching through the forest!
4. One mother bamboo plant can create several new stems each year. A single acre of bamboo forest can be harvested year after year not only for matuure bamboo, but also for new bamboo shoots which have a long history of use in the traditional Chinese kitchen. It is truly a fast, renewable resource!
5. By the way, Moso bamboo is much too big for pandas to eat. They prefer the much small bamboo species!
ChiaoGoo Needle Facts1. Using ChiaoGoo bamboo is environmentally friendly as bamboo is a quickly renewable resource.
2. Bamboo needles are approximately 60% lighter than aluminum needles of the same size, making it more comfortable for you, the knitter/crocheter.
3. Bamboo needles are very strong. Fibers under the bamboo's skin are extremely elastic and have tensile strength comparable to steel!
4. Knitters can benefit from the warmth and natural feel of the needles.

Patterns only from The Wren's Nest Updated 2/26/12 NEW!! Super Simple Series Patterns - Only from The Wren's Nest!Fall of 2011 was the dawn of our very own patterns for using various shaped frame looms. We owe our daughter full credit for the inspiration! Playing quietly as we are so lucky she is so good at, I glanced over to find she had found my proto-type pocket purse and had happily opened it, stuffed it over her head and was skipping through the house pushing "Baby" in her dolly stroller. An "OMG" moment. I immediately created another two foot triangle and, adding to the idea, wove 2 additional 6" triangles for ear flaps. (photo below). Voila, "Rena's Flaps-Hat". This is our Pattern #1.
Next was an idea I downsized from adult level to accommodate the silly Easter Dress companies that annually insist on sending summer-sleeved gowns to us in the northeast, in which to celebrate snowy Easters. Two 20" rectangles are combined to create a scrumptious warm shrug to keep her shoulders warm. (Photo right.) This is "Rena's Super Soft Shrug", our Pattern #2.
Pattern #3, although Rena's unknown inspiration, is for our Two-Pocket Purse. Coming soon.
All patterns ONLY available from The Wren's Nest! All patterns are $8.00 unless otherwise indicated, and are printed with sturdy cover.
NOTE: Patterns are scheduled for home-printing by mid-March 2012. Pre-0rders will be accepted. Call now!
