<![CDATA[The Unique and Delicious Herdwick Lamb]]>Fri, 17 Nov 2017 23:21:14 GMThttp://helderherdwyckfarm.com/happenings/the-unique-and-delicious-herdwick-lambHad you "herd"?

Our rare-breed sheep, the Herdwick, were once raised and shown by Beatrix Potter, of Peter Rabbit fame?

That Herdwick Lamb is prized by Queen Elizabeth herself, and was served at her Coronation Luncheon?

Recent studies have shown that the Herdwick differs from all other breeds of sheep genetically, showing a connection to only two other hill breeds, in England?

That the meat of Herdwick lamb is higher in nutritional values than other lamb meat?

That the carcass has a higher meat to bone ratio than other breeds?

The Herdwick Is noted as about the best mutton you can get? (stay tuned, mutton was given a bad rap for all the wrong reasons)

That the Herdwick thrives on comparably poor forage, in keeping with what humans learned was so wonderful about this animal, the sheep? Very low imput for higher yields per lb of body weight, better nutrition and a very unique fiber, to boot. In fact, they are the prime example of how grain is not only not a normal diet for ruminants, but unnecessary in primitive breedssuch as the Herdwick.

100% forage fed, our lambs are raised on pasture May through December as the primary species in our rotational grazing practices, and, provided hay through winter.
Clean, nutritious and delicious. Our customers swear our Herdwick bred lamb is the best lamb they have ever had.

And, the ONLY place you can get holistically and sustainably raised, 100% forage fed Herdwick lamb is from Helder~Herdwyck Farm. Unless you travel to England, maybe.
Sales of our sheep products - meats, fleeces, roving, yarns and sheepskins - help fund our breeding program, as we continue to breed our sheep toward 100%, purebred Herdwick.

Don't miss out, we have a limited supply of market lambs available by 1/2 or whole, starting in December. Reserve yours now!

<![CDATA[Herdwick bred Sheep for Sale!]]>Sun, 12 Nov 2017 15:24:38 GMThttp://helderherdwyckfarm.com/happenings/herdwick-bred-sheep-for-saleHelder~Herdwyck Farm is now offering breeding stock from our award winning Herdwick bred flock for adding their unique genetics to your own flock, or starting your own Herdwick flock. Photos of SOME, below.

Our lambs are 100% forage fed, and our ewes only, receive limited organic grain for 3 weeks in fall for flushing. Herdwick are a primitive breed and excell on natural forage - as sheep were originally designed to do, making them a highly sustainable breed for production of meat, hides and fiber.

Tests in the U.K. indicate Herdwick lamb to be of much higher nutritional value than other breeds. Unique in size, genetics, behavior, flavor, nutritional value, and fiber qualities. Bring an original, primitive, hardy breed to the U.S. with continued breeding.

Disease and parasite resistant, they are hardy, and best suited to cooler climates.

Our entire flock are CDT vaccinated.

All animals offered:
Prices include rabies vaccine, dewormer, health papers and registration papers, if applicable.

Proven animals:
Include production records. (May or may not include fleece weights).

Starter Flocks will be assembled using least-related animals with best potential for Herdwick traits. ALL Herdwick bred sheep in the U.S. are bred from only 2 rams' genetics.
